Zebra mantis shrimp, Lysiosquillina maculata (40 cm)

This is the world’s biggest mantis shrimp, which here is swimming just under the surface at night beside a Bagan fishing boat using bright light to attract fish. Magnus was actually there to photograph the whale sharks that follow the fishing boats in Papua Barat, and to his surprise he was attacked by this spearing mantis shrimp, which felt it owned some of the by-catch floating in the water.
