Monkfish, Lophius piscatorius (100 cm)
Saltstraumen, Bodö, Norway

A powerful monkfish photographed from underneath. Note the small bone-like pelvic fins that the fish uses to “walk” along the ocean floor. The monkfish is equipped with both a fishing “rod” and “lure” attached to its forehead. It is an excellent food fish and is caught too often before it has had a chance to breed. It has therefore been included on the WWF’s red list of species to be avoided as a food fish.
