Sargassum frogfish, Histrio histrio (5 cm)
Longdong, Taiwan
The sargassum frogfish darts forward to catch its prey. The forward power is generated by the fish expelling water through its gills. It stalks its prey and relies on camouflage, often hidden in drifting sargassum seaweed. The fish can open its mouth to become several times larger in a fraction of a second and it swallows prey larger than itself. They are cannibals; in one individual, 15 juvenile sargassum frogfish were found inside its stomach.
