Lion’s mane nudibranch, Melibe leonina (3 cm)
God’s Pocket, Vancouver Island, Canada
A strange nudibranch swims like a small fish through a bay filled with plankton. Most nudibranchs in the world creep calmly across the ocean floor when seeking food, but the unusual lion’s mane nudibranch has another strategy. It locates itself in plankton-rich places and uses its large hood-like mouth to scoop in crustaceans. To guarantee it finds a good spot, evolution has taught it to swim between the best places for food.
