Brown paper nautilus, Argonauta hians, on bamboo (3.5 cm)
Balayan Bay, Luzon, the Philippines

The brown paper nautilus belongs to an order of pelagic octopuses. It is only the females that produce the paper-thin shell, which is used both to regulate buoyancy and as a brood chamber for the nautilus’ eggs.
